Science Express off on its third lap across India

October 28, 2009

The third phase of the 'Science Express' was launched on 2nd October at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The exhibition on wheels is a cooperative venture between Germany’s Max Planck Society (MPG) and India’s Department of Science & Technology, and was launched the first time by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in October 2007.

After its flag off from New Delhi on 30th October, 2007, it has been showcased in 108 cities across India in two phases. The exhibition, which created four national records, received overwhelming response at all halts. Over 3.5 million people, mostly students, have enjoyed learning about cutting-edge research in science, explained through interesting audio visual exhibits and interactive tools.

Young visitors on a journey of exploration in the Science ExpressIn its present journey, the science train will travel to 55 locations, mostly not covered earlier, traversing about 18,000 kms in seven months. At each of the locations, it would halt for three to five days, during which students and general public would visit the exhibition.

This science exhibition on wheels was developed with the support of Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German companies BASF and Bosch. It gave Germany a unique opportunity to introduce to a nation of over one billion people the highlights of German research, and also prospects for strengthening Indo-German science and research collaborations.

The sparkling white fully air conditioned train with 16 coaches was custom made and specially fabricated at Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala. The exhibition, with more than 300 large-format visual images, over 150 video clips and multimedia exhibits, deals extensively with cutting-edge research and technology. Through these, the visitors explore wide areas in science in a fascinating manner and delve into the mysteries of our world, ground breaking discoveries, emerging issues, cutting-edge science and future-oriented technologies.
