Researchers from South Asia at Humboldt Foundation Fellows’ Meet

October 07, 2009

Around 100 young scientists and scholars from 33 countries will be guests in Oldenburg from 7th – 9th October on the occasion of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Network Meeting. The meeting allows new Humboldtians to get to know each other and familiarise themselves with Germany as a research location, taking Oldenburg as an example.

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a nature researcher and explorer, universal genius and cosmopolitan, scientist and patron. He not only invested his heritage in his own studies but also selflessly sponsored other young scholars and talents. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was established in Berlin 18 months after the death of von Humboldt in 1860. It provided support for German scientists setting off on research journeys to other countries. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was re-established in the post-War era by the Federal Republic of Germany on 10th December 1953.

Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables more than 1,800 researchers from all over the world to spend time researching in Germany. The Foundation maintains a network of some 23,000 Humboldtians from all disciplines in 130 countries worldwide—including 41 Nobel Prize winners.

At this year’s Foundation Fellows’ meet, there are 10 scientists from India, three from Bangladesh and one from Nepal. Apart from getting the opportunity to work alongside colleagues in Germany, the new Humboldtians will also get useful advice on living and researching in Germany from the Foundation's staff.

As part of the programme, on Thursday, 8th October, the Humboldtians will visit various institutes at the University of Oldenburg, where the international academics will report on the focal points of their current research. They will also have an opportunity to make contacts both with one another and with German colleagues.
